AbstractNumerical simulations of the thermal convection in a rotating spherical shell play an important role in dynamo simulations. In this paper, we present a highly scalable parallel solver for the Earth's outer core convection. The solver uses a second-order cell-centred finite volume spatial discretization based on the cubed-sphere grid instead of the traditional latitude-longitude grid to avoid grid singularity and enhance the parallel scalability. A second-order approximate factorization method combined with the Crank-Nicolson scheme is employed for splitting temporal integration. The two resultant sparse linear systems are solved by the Krylov subspace iterative method pre-conditioned with a restricted additive Schwarz pre-conditioner based on the domain decomposition of the cubed-sphere. The numerical results are in good agreement with the benchmark solutions and more accurate than the existing finite volume results. The solvers scale to over 10 000 processor cores with nearly linear scalability on the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer.
