AbstractThis paper provides a new strict mathematical analysis for the velocity-pressure-vorticity least-squares methods (i.e., the standard linear element method and the Bochev-Gunzburger method) for the 3D Stokes problem with homogeneous velocity boundary condition. The analysis shows that, in general, the divergence of the vorticity does not affect the coerciveness and the accuracy. This admits the use of the edge element for the vorticity to reduce the number of whole unknowns. Moreover, the analysis also shows that, in the standard linear element method, the L-2 error bound for the velocity is O(h(3/2)) generally. Numerical examples are presented.
