AbstractLet M be a compact Riemann manifold with the Ricci curvature greater than or equal to - R(R = const. > 0). Denote by d the diameter of M. Then the first eigenvalue lambda(1) of M satisfies lambda(1) greater than or equal to pi(2)/d(2) - 0.52R. Moreover if R less than or equal to 5 pi(2)/3d(2), then lambda(1) greater than or equal to pi(2)/d(2) -R/2.
